Description Preview

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Philips Hue Bridge allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code remotely.

Overview

The vulnerability in the Philips Hue Bridge allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code remotely. The issue stems from inadequate length validation of user-supplied data when processing PUT requests to the characteristics endpoint. This oversight can lead to a heap-based buffer overflow, potentially allowing attackers to execute malicious code with the device's privileges. Although authentication is normally required, the current authentication mechanism can be circumvented, increasing the risk of exploitation. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow) and has been assigned a CVSS v3.0 base score of 8.0, indicating high severity.

Remediation

  • As of the current information, no specific remediation steps have been provided by the vendor. However, general best practices for mitigating such vulnerabilities include:
  • 1. Updating the device firmware to the latest version once a patch is available.
  • 2. Implementing network segmentation to limit access to the affected devices.
  • 3. Monitoring network traffic for suspicious activities targeting the Philips Hue Bridge.
  • 4. Strengthening authentication mechanisms and access controls.
  • 5. Regularly reviewing and updating security configurations.
  • Users and administrators should stay informed about any official security advisories or patches released by Philips for the Hue Bridge and apply them promptly when available.
