Description Preview

Panda Software Antivirus versions before 20070402 contain a flaw in the ZOO archive decompression logic. By supplying a specially crafted ZOO archive with a direntry structure that references a previously extracted file, an attacker can trigger an infinite loop in the decompression routine, resulting in a denial of service. This vulnerability affects installations that process ZOO archives with the malformed direntry.

Overview

This CVE describes a denial-of-service vulnerability in Panda Software Antivirus where processing a ZOO archive containing a direntry that points to a previously existing file can cause the decompression routine to enter an infinite loop, potentially making the affected system unresponsive. The issue is exploitable remotely and affects versions prior to 20070402.

Remediation

  • Upgrade Panda Software Antivirus to version released on or after 20070402 (or apply the vendor patch that fixes CVE-2007-1670).
  • Enable and enforce automatic updates to ensure the fix is deployed across all endpoints.
  • After applying the update, run a full system scan to verify protection and monitor for any signs of lingering degradation in performance.
  • If upgrading is not feasible, implement compensating controls such as restricting or filtering ZOO archives at network or gateway layers, or disable/limit automatic decompression of archives if the product allows, and plan for an upgrade as soon as possible.
