The CVE-2010-1081 is a directory traversal vulnerability that exists in the Community Polls (com_communitypolls) component 1.5.2, and possibly earlier versions, for Core Joomla! This vulnerability allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the controller parameter to index.php. This could potentially allow an attacker to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information or exert control over the system.
Overview
The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation in the 'controller' parameter of the 'index.php' file in the Community Polls component of Joomla. This allows an attacker to manipulate the file path that the application uses to access system files, leading to information disclosure. The vulnerability was published on 23rd March 2010 by MITRE.
Remediation
Users of affected versions should update to the latest version of the Community Polls component for Joomla. It is also recommended to validate and sanitize all user inputs, especially those used in file system operations, to prevent directory traversal attacks.
