The vulnerability in Chef Server in Chef before versions 0.9.20 and 0.10.x before 0.10.6 allows authenticated users to create admin clients without needing administrative privileges. This issue arises from a lack of proper access control, enabling users with read permission for the validation key to execute a knife client create command with the --admin option, thereby bypassing intended access restrictions.
Overview
This vulnerability in Chef Server allows remote authenticated users to elevate their privileges and bypass access restrictions by creating admin clients without the necessary administrative privileges. By leveraging read permission for the validation key, an attacker can execute a specific command to gain unauthorized access.
Remediation
To remediate this vulnerability, users are advised to upgrade to a fixed version of Chef Server. Users should update to version 0.9.20 or 0.10.6 or later to address this issue. Additionally, it is recommended to review and adjust access control settings to ensure that only authorized users have the necessary permissions to create admin clients.
