Description Preview
The rc4encrypt function in lib/moodlelib.php in Moodle versions 1.9.x through 2.2.x uses a hardcoded password of "nfgjeingjk." This hardcoded password makes it easier for remote attackers to defeat cryptographic protection mechanisms by reading the source code of the script within the open-source software distribution. This vulnerability could potentially lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information or data manipulation within the affected Moodle instances.
Overview
This vulnerability affects Moodle versions 1.9.x through 2.2.x and was assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2012-0794. It was published on July 17, 2012, and the issue was made public on January 20, 2012. The vulnerability allows remote attackers to bypass cryptographic protection mechanisms by exploiting a hardcoded password in the rc4encrypt function.
Remediation
To remediate this vulnerability, users of affected Moodle versions should upgrade to version 2.2.1 or later, where the hardcoded password issue has been addressed. It is recommended to update Moodle installations to the latest available version to mitigate the risk of exploitation.
