CVE-2012-0873:Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Boonex Dolphin prior to 7.0.8 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML via the explain parameter to explanation.php or the photos_only, online_only, or mode parameters to viewFriends.php.

Description Preview

Boonex Dolphin versions before 7.0.8 suffer from multiple cross-site scripting vulnerabilities that enable remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML into users’ browsers. An attacker can exploit the explain parameter in explanation.php or the photos_only, online_only, or mode parameters in viewFriends.php to deliver malicious content that is executed in the context of a victim’s session. Depending on the site and user context, exploitation can lead to actions such as session hijacking, defacement, or phishing-style attacks. The issues were addressed in Dolphin version 7.0.8 and later.

Overview

Boonex Dolphin contains several XSS vulnerabilities in which unsafely echoed user-supplied input via specific query parameters can trigger script execution in a victim’s browser. The affected parameters include explain in explanation.php and photos_only, online_only, and mode in viewFriends.php. These flaws permit remote attackers to inject and execute arbitrary script, potentially compromising user accounts and site integrity. Upgrade to a fixed release (7.0.8 or later) to mitigate the risk.

Remediation

  • Upgrade Boonex Dolphin to version 7.0.8 or newer (apply the vendor patch).
  • If upgrade is not feasible, apply a hotfix or patch that addresses input handling for explanation.php (explain parameter) and viewFriends.php (photos_only, online_only, mode parameters).
  • Implement strict input validation and output encoding for all user-supplied data before it is reflected in HTML pages (e.g., HTML entity encoding).
  • Whitelist allowed values for the vulnerable parameters and enforce length limits to minimize injection risk.
  • Consider enabling a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with XSS protection rules and regular rule updates.
  • Perform post-implementation security testing (manual review and automated XSS scans) to verify that the parameters cannot inject scripts.
  • Review access controls and monitor logs for unusual activity related to these endpoints.
