Description Preview

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the WinVerifyTrust function in Microsoft Windows, specifically in the way it handles Windows Authenticode signature verification for portable executable (PE) files. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by modifying a signed executable file to include malicious code without invalidating the signature, potentially leading to complete control of the affected system.

Overview

This vulnerability allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a target system by exploiting the way Windows handles signature verification for PE files. Successful exploitation could result in the attacker gaining full control over the system, allowing them to install programs, manipulate data, or create new accounts with elevated privileges. Users with administrative rights are particularly at risk.

Remediation

To mitigate this vulnerability, Microsoft recommends enabling the EnableCertPaddingCheck registry value, which is available in all supported versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. This feature enhances the verification behavior of Windows Authenticode signatures. Users are advised to set this registry key to opt-in to the stricter verification behavior.

It is important to note that Microsoft does not enforce the stricter verification behavior by default on supported Windows releases. The reg key must be manually configured to enable this feature. No security update is required as the supporting code for this feature was incorporated into Windows 10 and Windows 11 at the time of release.
