Description Preview

The needSamples method in AudioOutputSpeech.cpp in the client in Mumble 1.2.4 and the 1.2.3 pre-release snapshots, Mumble for iOS 1.1 through 1.2.2, and MumbleKit before commit fd190328a9b24d37382b269a5674b0c0c7a7e36d does not properly check the return value of the opus_decode_float function. This vulnerability can be exploited by remote attackers to trigger an error in opus_decode_float, leading to a conversion of a negative integer to an unsigned integer, resulting in a heap-based buffer over-read and over-write.

Overview

This vulnerability in Mumble versions 1.2.4 and earlier, as well as Mumble for iOS versions 1.1 through 1.2.2, allows remote attackers to potentially execute arbitrary code by exploiting a flaw in the handling of Opus voice packets. The issue arises from a lack of proper validation in the needSamples method, leading to a denial of service condition and potential code execution.

Remediation

To remediate this vulnerability, users are advised to update their Mumble software to a version that includes a fix for this issue. It is recommended to upgrade to a version beyond Mumble 1.2.4 and Mumble for iOS 1.2.2 to mitigate the risk of exploitation. Additionally, users should apply any patches or security updates provided by the Mumble project to address this specific vulnerability.
