The authentication_agent_new function in polkitbackend/polkitbackendinteractiveauthority.c in PolicyKit (polkit) before 0.113 allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and polkitd daemon crash) by calling RegisterAuthenticationAgent with an invalid object path.

Overview

This vulnerability in PolicyKit (polkit) affects versions prior to 0.113 and allows local users to exploit it to crash the polkitd daemon by triggering a NULL pointer dereference. The issue was first made public on May 29, 2015.

Remediation

To remediate this vulnerability, users are advised to update their PolicyKit installation to version 0.113 or later. By upgrading to a patched version, the NULL pointer dereference issue can be mitigated, preventing local users from causing a denial of service by crashing the polkitd daemon.
