Description Preview

A reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in Moxa G3100V2 Series devices prior to Version 2.8 and OnCell G3111/G3151/G3211/G3251 Series devices prior to Version 1.7. This vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious scripts that execute within a user's browser in the context of the vulnerable website. The vulnerability exploits the trust relationship between the user's browser and the server, potentially enabling attackers to steal sensitive information, manipulate content, or perform unauthorized actions on behalf of the user.

Overview

The vulnerability (CWE-79: Cross-site Scripting) affects Moxa industrial networking devices used in critical infrastructure environments. When exploited, this XSS vulnerability could allow an attacker to inject client-side scripts into web pages viewed by users of the affected devices. This could lead to:

  • Theft of authentication credentials or session tokens
  • Unauthorized access to sensitive information
  • Manipulation of device configuration
  • Defacement of the web interface
  • Redirection of users to malicious websites
  • Execution of arbitrary code within the user's browser context

The vulnerability is particularly concerning for industrial control systems where these devices may be used to manage critical network infrastructure.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, the following actions are recommended:

  1. Update affected Moxa G3100V2 Series devices to Version 2.8 or later
  2. Update affected OnCell G3111/G3151/G3211/G3251 Series devices to Version 1.7 or later
  3. If immediate updates are not possible, implement the following mitigations:
    • Restrict access to the web interface using IP-based access control lists
    • Use network segmentation to isolate vulnerable devices
    • Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity
    • Implement proper input validation at the application layer
    • Consider using a web application firewall to filter malicious requests
