Description Preview
An exploitable information leak vulnerability exists in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. The HTTP server implementation incorrectly checks the number of GET parameters supplied, leading to an arbitrarily controlled information leak on the whole device memory. An attacker can send an authenticated HTTP request to trigger this vulnerability, potentially exposing sensitive information stored in the device's memory.
Overview
This vulnerability (CVE-2017-14443) is classified as CWE-200 (Information Exposure). The issue affects the Insteon Hub's HTTP server implementation, which fails to properly validate GET parameters. Due to this flaw, an authenticated attacker can craft specific HTTP requests that cause the system to leak arbitrary memory contents. This could expose sensitive information such as credentials, configuration data, or other confidential information stored in the device's memory. The vulnerability requires authentication to exploit, which somewhat limits the attack surface, but still presents a significant security risk for deployed devices.
Remediation
- Update to the latest firmware version if a patch has been released by Insteon.
- If no patch is available, consider implementing network-level controls to restrict access to the Insteon Hub's web interface.
- Ensure the device is not directly exposed to the internet.
- Use strong, unique passwords for authentication to the Insteon Hub.
- Monitor for suspicious access attempts to the device.
- Consider network segmentation to isolate IoT devices like the Insteon Hub from critical network resources.
