Description Preview

A command injection vulnerability exists in NETGEAR ReadyNAS Surveillance before versions 1.4.3-17 (x86) and 1.1.4-7 (ARM). The vulnerability occurs because the 'uploaddir' parameter from GET requests is not properly sanitized before being passed to the system() function through the $tmp_upload_dir variable in the upgrade_handle.php file. This allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the affected system via the cmd=writeuploaddir parameter.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2017-18378) is classified as a Command Injection vulnerability (CWE-77) affecting NETGEAR ReadyNAS Surveillance applications. The issue stems from improper input validation in the upgrade_handle.php script, where the $_GET['uploaddir'] parameter is passed directly to a system command without proper sanitization. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by crafting a malicious request to the affected application, potentially gaining unauthorized access to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the web server. This could lead to complete system compromise, data theft, or use of the affected system as a pivot point for further attacks on the network.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, NETGEAR has released security updates for the affected ReadyNAS Surveillance application. Users should update to the following versions or later:

  • For x86 systems: Version 1.4.3-17 or later
  • For ARM systems: Version 1.1.4-7 or later

The update can be obtained through the NETGEAR support website or through the device's administrative interface. In addition to updating, users should:

  1. Ensure that remote administration is disabled if not required
  2. Implement network segmentation to limit access to the ReadyNAS device
  3. Use strong, unique passwords for all administrative accounts
  4. Monitor system logs for suspicious activities
  5. Consider placing the device behind a properly configured firewall
