Overview
This vulnerability (CVE-2017-18481) affects cPanel installations prior to version 62.0.4. The issue is a stored XSS vulnerability (CWE-79) in the WHM Account Suspension List interface, identified internally as SEC-211. Stored XSS vulnerabilities are particularly dangerous as they don't require direct interaction with the victim - the malicious script is stored on the server and executed whenever a user accesses the affected page. In this case, attackers could potentially inject malicious JavaScript code that would execute in the browser of WHM administrators viewing the suspension list, potentially leading to unauthorized access to the administrator's session or other sensitive actions.
Remediation
To address this vulnerability, system administrators should:
- Update cPanel to version 62.0.4 or later as soon as possible
- Verify that the update has been successfully applied by checking the current version in WHM
- Review account suspension lists for any suspicious entries that might indicate previous exploitation attempts
- Consider implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers as an additional layer of protection against XSS attacks
- Monitor system logs for any unusual activities that might indicate exploitation attempts
