Description Preview

The JSON viewer in Mozilla's Developer Tools contains a vulnerability that uses insecure methods to create a communication channel for copying and viewing JSON or HTTP headers data. This insecure implementation could allow attackers to escalate privileges. The vulnerability affects Firefox versions prior to 51, Firefox ESR versions prior to 45.7, and Thunderbird versions prior to 45.7.

Overview

CVE-2017-5390 is a security vulnerability in Mozilla's Developer Tools, specifically in the JSON viewer component. The vulnerability stems from the insecure implementation of communication channels used for copying and viewing JSON data or HTTP headers. When a user interacts with the JSON viewer in the Developer Tools, the insecure channel could be exploited to perform privilege escalation attacks. This could potentially allow attackers to gain elevated permissions within the browser context, compromising the security of the affected system. The vulnerability was discovered and reported through Mozilla's bug tracking system (Bugzilla ID: 1297361).

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, users should update to the following versions or later:

  • Firefox: Update to version 51 or later
  • Firefox ESR: Update to version 45.7 or later
  • Thunderbird: Update to version 45.7 or later

System administrators should ensure that all Mozilla products are kept up-to-date with the latest security patches. Organizations using centralized management systems should deploy these updates as soon as possible to mitigate the risk of exploitation.
