Description Preview

A vulnerability in ArubaOS allows unauthenticated users with network access to an Aruba mobility controller on TCP ports 8080 or 8081 to access arbitrary files stored on the mobility controller. These ports are used for captive portal functionality and are listening by default on all IP interfaces. The vulnerability could allow attackers to access sensitive files containing passwords, keys, and other information that could lead to full system compromise.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2017-9000) affects multiple versions of ArubaOS prior to specific security patches. The issue is classified as CWE-200 (Information Disclosure) and allows unauthenticated attackers to access arbitrary files on Aruba mobility controllers. The vulnerability exists in the captive portal functionality which listens on TCP ports 8080 and 8081 by default on all IP interfaces of the mobility controller. An attacker who can reach these ports can potentially access sensitive system files containing credentials, encryption keys, and configuration data, potentially leading to complete system compromise. Both FIPS and non-FIPS versions of the software are equally affected.

Remediation

Organizations using affected versions of ArubaOS should upgrade to the following patched versions:

  • Version 6.3.1.25 or later
  • Version 6.4.4.16 or later
  • Version 6.5.1.9 or later
  • Version 6.5.3.3 or later
  • Version 6.5.4.2 or later
  • Version 8.1.0.4 or later

If immediate patching is not possible, organizations should consider implementing network access controls to restrict access to TCP ports 8080 and 8081 on affected controllers to only trusted management networks or hosts.
