The vulnerability CVE-2018-8440 is an elevation of privilege vulnerability that exists when Windows improperly handles calls to Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC). This vulnerability affects multiple versions of Windows including Windows 7, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 10, and Windows 10 Servers. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code in the context of the local system.
Overview
The vulnerability is due to improper handling of calls to Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC) by the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by running a specially crafted application on the target system. Successful exploitation could lead to an elevation of privilege, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the local system.
Remediation
