Overview
This vulnerability (CVE-2020-10231) affects TP-Link Cloud Camera models in the NC series, including NC200 through firmware version 2.1.8_Build_171109, NC210 through 1.0.9_Build_171214, NC220 through 1.3.0_Build_180105, NC230 through 1.3.0_Build_171205, NC250 through 1.3.0_Build_171205, NC260 through 1.5.1_Build_190805, and NC450 through 1.5.0_Build_181022. The vulnerability is classified as a NULL Pointer Dereference (CWE-476), which occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid but is actually NULL. When exploited remotely, this can cause the device to crash, resulting in a denial of service condition that may require manual intervention to restore normal operation.
Remediation
To mitigate this vulnerability, users should:
- Update firmware to the latest version provided by TP-Link that addresses this vulnerability
- If updates are unavailable, consider implementing network segmentation to limit access to the cameras
- Configure firewalls to restrict access to the camera's management interface from untrusted networks
- Monitor camera systems for unexpected reboots or crashes that might indicate exploitation attempts
- Contact TP-Link support for model-specific patching information if your device is affected
