Description Preview

The sitepress-multilingual-cms (WPML) plugin versions prior to 4.3.7-b.2 for WordPress contain a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability caused by loose comparison operations in the code. This security flaw can be exploited through a series of crafted requests that take advantage of unintended comparisons between integers and strings in the includes/class-wp-installer.php file, ultimately leading to remote code execution on the affected WordPress installation.

Overview

The WPML (WordPress Multilingual) plugin is a popular tool used to create multilingual WordPress websites. The vulnerability identified as CVE-2020-10568 affects versions prior to 4.3.7-b.2 and is classified as CWE-352 (Cross-Site Request Forgery). The issue stems from improper validation of user requests in the plugin's installer class. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by tricking an authenticated administrator into visiting a malicious website that triggers specially crafted requests to the vulnerable WordPress site. Due to the loose comparison issues in the code, these requests can bypass security checks and ultimately lead to arbitrary code execution on the server.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, website administrators should take the following actions:

  1. Update the WPML plugin to version 4.3.7-b.2 or later immediately.
  2. Implement general security best practices for WordPress sites:
    • Use strong, unique passwords for all administrator accounts
    • Enable two-factor authentication where possible
    • Keep all WordPress core files, themes, and plugins updated
    • Consider implementing a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to help block malicious requests
  3. Review server logs for any suspicious activity that might indicate exploitation attempts.
  4. If compromise is suspected, conduct a thorough security audit of the WordPress installation.
