Description Preview

Rejetto HTTP File Server (HFS) v2.3m Build #300 contains a buffer overflow vulnerability that can be exploited when virtual files or folders are used. Remote attackers can trigger an invalid-pointer write access violation by sending concurrent HTTP requests with a long URI or long HTTP headers, potentially leading to a denial of service condition.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-13432) affects Rejetto HTTP File Server v2.3m Build #300 and earlier versions. The issue occurs in the handling of HTTP requests when virtual files or folders are being used. By sending specially crafted requests with excessively long URIs or HTTP headers concurrently, an attacker can cause a buffer overflow condition, resulting in an invalid-pointer write access violation. This can lead to a denial of service (DoS) by crashing the application, and potentially could be leveraged for arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-120 (Classic Buffer Overflow), which occurs when software writes data beyond the end of the allocated buffer.

Remediation

Users should upgrade to the latest version of Rejetto HTTP File Server that contains the fix for this vulnerability. The issue has been addressed in a patch as indicated in the GitHub commit b8ebfc4e22948e1a61506cd66e397b61ea5ea5de. If upgrading is not immediately possible, consider implementing the following mitigations:

  1. Limit access to the HFS server to trusted networks only
  2. Implement a reverse proxy with request filtering to block malicious requests
  3. Consider using an alternative file server solution if patches cannot be applied
  4. Monitor server logs for suspicious activities or unexpected crashes
