Description Preview

A vulnerability has been identified in Ozeki NG SMS Gateway through version 4.17.6. The RSS To SMS module processes XML files without proper validation, making it susceptible to XML External Entity (XXE) attacks. This vulnerability (CWE-611) allows attackers to read arbitrary files on the server's filesystem or perform Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) attacks by submitting specially crafted XML input. The XXE vulnerability could potentially lead to information disclosure, server-side request forgery, denial of service, or other security issues depending on the server configuration.

Overview

The Ozeki NG SMS Gateway is a software solution that enables organizations to send and receive SMS messages from various applications. The vulnerability exists in the RSS To SMS module, which is designed to convert RSS feeds into SMS messages. This module processes XML data from RSS feeds but fails to disable external entity processing, which allows attackers to exploit XXE vulnerabilities. An attacker could craft malicious XML content that, when processed by the vulnerable module, could lead to unauthorized access to files on the server's filesystem or enable SSRF attacks to reach internal network resources that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, system administrators should:

  1. Update Ozeki NG SMS Gateway to the latest version that includes patches for this vulnerability.
  2. If immediate updating is not possible, consider disabling the RSS To SMS module until the update can be applied.
  3. Implement network-level controls to restrict the SMS Gateway's ability to make outbound connections to internal resources.
  4. Apply the principle of least privilege to the service account running the SMS Gateway application.
  5. Monitor system logs for suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation attempts.
  6. Consider implementing a Web Application Firewall (WAF) that can detect and block XXE attack patterns.
