Description Preview

CVE-2020-14787 affects Oracle Communications Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) versions 8.0.0.0 through 8.4.0.5. This vulnerability exists in the User Interface component and allows a low-privileged attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise the system. The attack requires human interaction from someone other than the attacker. Successful exploitation can result in unauthorized update, insert, or delete access to some DSR accessible data, as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of DSR accessible data. The vulnerability may significantly impact additional products beyond DSR.

Overview

This vulnerability in Oracle Communications DSR allows attackers with low privileges to gain unauthorized access to data and potentially modify it. The attack vector is through HTTP and requires social engineering to trick a legitimate user into performing certain actions. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 Base Score of 5.4, indicating a medium severity level. The attack can breach confidentiality by allowing unauthorized read access to data and compromise integrity through unauthorized updates, insertions, or deletions of data. While the vulnerability exists in DSR, successful exploitation could have broader impacts on connected systems or additional Oracle products.

Remediation

Oracle has addressed this vulnerability in the October 2020 Critical Patch Update (CPU). Organizations using affected versions of Oracle Communications Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) should:

  1. Update to the latest patched version as provided in the Oracle October 2020 CPU.
  2. Implement network segmentation to limit access to the DSR User Interface.
  3. Enforce strong authentication mechanisms for all users with access to the DSR.
  4. Train users on social engineering awareness to reduce the risk of the required human interaction component.
  5. Monitor system logs for suspicious activities related to the User Interface component.
