Description Preview

In Wiki.js versions prior to 2.5.162, a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists where malicious code can be injected into page titles and executed when those pages appear in search results. While the application properly escapes page titles in navigation links and on the actual page, it fails to implement proper escaping in search results, allowing attackers to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript code when users view search results containing the compromised pages.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-15274) affects Wiki.js, a modern open-source wiki application, in all versions before 2.5.162. The issue stems from insufficient input validation and output encoding in the search results functionality. An attacker with permissions to create or edit page titles could inject malicious JavaScript code that would execute in the context of other users' browsers when they view search results containing the compromised page. This could potentially lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks depending on the context in which Wiki.js is deployed.

Remediation

Users should immediately upgrade to Wiki.js version 2.5.162 or later, which properly escapes text content displayed in search results. The fix was implemented in commit a57d9af34c15adbf460dde6553d964efddf433de. If immediate upgrading is not possible, administrators should consider:

  1. Restricting page creation/editing permissions to trusted users only
  2. Implementing additional web application firewall rules to filter potential XSS payloads
  3. Monitoring for suspicious page titles that may contain JavaScript code
