Description Preview

CVE-2020-15615 is a critical vulnerability in CentOS Web Panel (CWP) version e17.0.9.8.923 that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code without requiring authentication. The vulnerability exists in the ajax_ftp_manager.php component, which fails to properly validate user-supplied input before passing it to a system call. This vulnerability is particularly severe as it allows attackers to execute commands with root privileges, giving them complete control over the affected system.

Overview

The vulnerability in CentOS Web Panel (CWP) is a classic example of command injection due to improper input validation. The ajax_ftp_manager.php component accepts user-supplied strings and passes them directly to system calls without adequate sanitization or validation. Since the web panel runs with root privileges, any injected commands are executed with the highest system privileges. This vulnerability requires no authentication to exploit, making it particularly dangerous as any remote attacker who can reach the web panel can potentially compromise the server. The issue was identified and reported through the Zero Day Initiative program as ZDI-CAN-9746.

Remediation

  1. Update CentOS Web Panel to a version that addresses this vulnerability. Check the official CWP website for security updates.
  2. If immediate patching is not possible, consider implementing network-level restrictions to limit access to the CWP admin panel to trusted IP addresses only.
  3. Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to filter potentially malicious requests targeting the ajax_ftp_manager.php endpoint.
  4. Monitor system logs for suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation attempts.
  5. Consider running the web panel with reduced privileges where possible, following the principle of least privilege.
  6. Regularly audit your server for unauthorized changes or unexpected files that might indicate a compromise.
