Description Preview

A vulnerability in Keycloak before version 13.0.0 allows users to maintain access to resources even after their role mappings have been changed and previous access tokens have expired. This authorization flaw (CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization) could allow unauthorized access to protected resources.

Overview

This vulnerability affects Keycloak's authorization mechanism. When administrators modify a user's role mappings to remove access to certain resources, the changes may not be properly enforced. Even after the previous access token expires and a new one is issued, the user might still retain access to resources they should no longer be able to access. This creates a security risk where users could maintain unauthorized access to sensitive information or functionality despite administrative attempts to revoke their privileges.

Remediation

Users should upgrade to Keycloak version 13.0.0 or later which contains fixes for this vulnerability. If upgrading is not immediately possible, administrators should be aware that role mapping changes may not be immediately effective and should implement additional security controls to protect sensitive resources. After changing role mappings, administrators may need to manually invalidate all active sessions for the affected user to ensure the changes take effect properly.
