Description Preview

A reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been identified in Jeesns version 1.4.2. The vulnerability exists in the /weibo/topic component, which fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before reflecting it back to users in the response. This allows attackers to inject and execute arbitrary web scripts or HTML in the context of a victim's browser session, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks.

Overview

Jeesns is an open-source social networking system based on Java. The vulnerability (CVE-2020-19295) is classified as CWE-79 (Cross-site Scripting) and affects version 1.4.2 of the software. When a user accesses the /weibo/topic component with specially crafted input, the application reflects the input back without proper validation or encoding, allowing malicious JavaScript to be executed in the user's browser. This could enable attackers to steal cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive information, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or modify the page content to conduct phishing attacks.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, system administrators and developers should:

  1. Update to the latest version of Jeesns if a patched version is available
  2. If updating is not possible, implement input validation and output encoding:
    • Validate all user inputs before processing
    • Implement context-appropriate output encoding when reflecting user input
    • Consider implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers
  3. Apply web application firewall rules to filter potentially malicious requests targeting the /weibo/topic component
  4. Conduct a thorough security review of similar components in the application to identify and fix similar vulnerabilities
