Description Preview

Jenkins White Source Plugin versions 19.1.1 and earlier contain a security vulnerability where credentials are stored in plaintext in configuration files. These credentials are stored unencrypted in the global configuration file and in job config.xml files on the Jenkins master. This makes the credentials accessible to users who have Extended Read permission to access config.xml files or to anyone with access to the Jenkins master file system. This vulnerability is classified as CWE-522 (Insufficiently Protected Credentials).

Overview

The Jenkins White Source Plugin is used to integrate WhiteSource software composition analysis into Jenkins pipelines. The vulnerability allows sensitive credentials to be exposed in plaintext within configuration files. Since these credentials are not properly encrypted, they can be accessed by users with Extended Read permissions or file system access to the Jenkins master. This represents a significant security risk as these credentials could potentially be used to access WhiteSource services and sensitive project information. The exposure of these credentials could lead to unauthorized access to WhiteSource resources and potentially compromise the security of the software supply chain analysis.

Remediation

Users should upgrade to Jenkins White Source Plugin version 19.1.2 or later, which properly encrypts credentials. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the following temporary mitigations are recommended:

  1. Restrict Extended Read permissions to only trusted users
  2. Limit file system access to the Jenkins master
  3. Consider rotating any credentials that may have been exposed
  4. Regularly audit access logs for any suspicious activity related to the WhiteSource integration
  5. After upgrading, verify that new credentials are properly encrypted
