Description Preview

Jenkins Matrix Project Plugin 1.16 and earlier contains a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The plugin fails to properly escape axis names displayed in tooltips on the overview page of builds with multiple axes. This allows attackers with the ability to configure jobs to inject malicious JavaScript code that executes in victims' browsers when they hover over these tooltips.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-2225) affects the Jenkins Matrix Project Plugin versions 1.16 and earlier. The issue is classified as CWE-79: Cross-site Scripting. The vulnerability occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize axis names when displaying them in tooltips on the build overview page. An attacker with job configuration permissions could create a matrix project with maliciously crafted axis names containing JavaScript code. When other users view the build overview page and hover over elements with these tooltips, the injected JavaScript would execute in their browsers within the Jenkins domain context. This could lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks.

Remediation

To remediate this vulnerability:

  1. Update the Jenkins Matrix Project Plugin to version 1.17 or later, which contains the fix for this issue.
  2. If immediate updating is not possible, consider:
    • Restricting who can configure jobs in your Jenkins instance
    • Implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS attacks
    • Regularly reviewing job configurations for suspicious axis names
  3. Monitor the Jenkins security advisories for any additional information or updates related to this vulnerability.
  4. Consider conducting a security review of other plugins that may have similar vulnerabilities.
