Description Preview

Gophish versions through 0.10.1 contain a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability that allows attackers to inject and execute malicious JavaScript code. The vulnerability exists in the handling of user-supplied content in landing pages and email templates. When an attacker creates a specially crafted landing page or email template containing malicious script code, this code can be executed in the context of other users' browsers when they access the affected pages. This could lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks.

Overview

Gophish is an open-source phishing toolkit designed for security awareness and testing. The vulnerability (CVE-2020-24709) allows attackers to inject malicious scripts into landing pages or email templates that are then executed when viewed by users with access to the Gophish dashboard. This XSS vulnerability (CWE-79) could allow attackers to steal cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive information retained by the browser and used with the site. It could also be used to modify the content displayed to users or redirect them to malicious sites. The vulnerability affects all versions of Gophish through version 0.10.1.

Remediation

Organizations using Gophish should take the following actions:

  1. Update to the latest version of Gophish that contains patches for this vulnerability.
  2. If immediate updating is not possible, implement input validation and output encoding for all user-supplied content in landing pages and email templates.
  3. Consider implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate the impact of XSS vulnerabilities.
  4. Review all existing landing pages and email templates for potentially malicious content.
  5. Limit access to the Gophish dashboard to only trusted users and enforce strong authentication.
  6. Monitor logs for suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation attempts.
