Description Preview

Observium Professional, Enterprise & Community version 20.8.10631 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. An attacker can inject and store malicious JavaScript code via the graph_title parameter to the graphs/ URI. This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of other users' browsers, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-25135) affects Observium network monitoring software version 20.8.10631, including Professional, Enterprise, and Community editions. The application fails to properly sanitize user input in the graph_title parameter when accessing the graphs/ URI. As a result, malicious JavaScript code can be injected and stored within the application, which is then executed when other users view the affected page. This stored XSS vulnerability could allow attackers to steal session cookies, capture credentials, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or deliver malware to users with elevated privileges.

Remediation

To remediate this vulnerability, consider the following steps:

  1. Update to the latest version of Observium that contains fixes for this vulnerability.
  2. If updating is not immediately possible, implement input validation and output encoding for the graph_title parameter.
  3. Consider implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate the impact of XSS attacks.
  4. Review and audit other input fields in the application for similar vulnerabilities.
  5. Educate administrators about the risks of XSS attacks and the importance of validating user input.
  6. Monitor system logs for suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation attempts.
