Description Preview

Observium Professional, Enterprise & Community version 20.8.10631 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The application fails to properly sanitize user input in the /iftype/type= parameter, allowing attackers to inject and store malicious JavaScript code. This vulnerability is present in the pages/iftype.inc.php file and could lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-25148) affects Observium, a network monitoring platform available in Professional, Enterprise, and Community editions. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79 (Cross-Site Scripting) and allows attackers to inject malicious JavaScript code that gets stored in the application and executed when other users access the affected pages. The vulnerability specifically exists in the interface type functionality, where input from the /iftype/type= parameter is not properly sanitized before being stored and displayed to users. When exploited, this could allow attackers to steal session cookies, capture credentials, or perform actions on behalf of other users, including administrators.

Remediation

  1. Update to the latest version of Observium that contains fixes for this vulnerability.
  2. If immediate updating is not possible, implement input validation and output encoding for the affected parameter in pages/iftype.inc.php.
  3. Consider implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate the impact of XSS attacks.
  4. Review other input fields in the application for similar vulnerabilities and apply proper input sanitization and output encoding.
  5. Educate administrators about the risks of XSS vulnerabilities and the importance of keeping the application updated.
