Description Preview

A vulnerability in Cisco Webex applications allows attackers to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition by exploiting insufficient validation of Universal Communications Format (UCF) files. When a victim opens a malicious UCF file sent via link or email attachment, the Webex application crashes unexpectedly, disrupting service for the affected user.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-3116) affects Cisco Webex applications that process Universal Communications Format (UCF) files. The root cause is insufficient validation of UCF media files, which allows maliciously crafted files to trigger application crashes. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-20 (Improper Input Validation). An attacker can exploit this by distributing malicious UCF files through links or email attachments and persuading users to open them with the affected Webex application. When successful, the attack causes the application to quit unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service for the affected user.

Remediation

Users should apply the latest security updates provided by Cisco for affected Webex applications. Additionally, implement the following security practices:

  1. Exercise caution when opening UCF files from unknown or untrusted sources
  2. Verify the source of any links or email attachments before opening them
  3. Keep Cisco Webex applications updated to the latest version
  4. Consider implementing email filtering to block suspicious attachments
  5. Educate users about the risks of opening unexpected attachments
