Description Preview

The J-BusinessDirectory extension before version 5.2.9 for Joomla! contains a Reverse Tabnabbing vulnerability (CWE-269). When users can enter business website links, the extension fails to include rel="noopener" or similar protective attributes. This allows malicious links to exploit the window.opener property, potentially redirecting the original tab to a phishing site or other malicious content when a user clicks on an external link.

Overview

Reverse Tabnabbing is a phishing attack where a malicious website opened in a new tab can redirect the original page to a phishing site. In J-BusinessDirectory before 5.2.9, when users create business listings with external website links, the extension doesn't properly secure these links with rel="noopener" or similar attributes. If a visitor clicks on a malicious business website link, the attacker can use JavaScript to access the window.opener property and change the location of the original tab to a phishing site. This is particularly dangerous because users may not notice when returning to what they believe is the original tab, now containing malicious content.

Remediation

  • Update J-BusinessDirectory to version 5.2.9 or later which addresses this vulnerability
  • If immediate updating is not possible, consider implementing custom code to add rel="noopener noreferrer" to all external links
  • Administrators should review and moderate all business listings with external links
  • Consider implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to provide additional protection against script-based attacks
  • Educate users about the risks of clicking on untrusted external links
