Description Preview

Dell EMC iDRAC9 versions prior to 4.20.20.20 contain a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) that allows remote authenticated users with low privileges to gain unauthorized read access to arbitrary files on the system by manipulating input parameters.

Overview

This vulnerability affects Dell EMC iDRAC9 (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) versions prior to 4.20.20.20. The path traversal vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with low privileges to access files outside of the intended directory structure by manipulating path parameters. By exploiting this vulnerability, attackers can potentially read sensitive configuration files, credentials, or other confidential information stored on the system. This could lead to further compromise of the iDRAC management interface or connected systems. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-22 (Path Traversal) and requires authentication with low-level privileges to exploit.

Remediation

To remediate this vulnerability, Dell recommends upgrading iDRAC9 firmware to version 4.20.20.20 or later. The update can be obtained through the Dell Support website or through Dell Update Packages. If immediate patching is not possible, organizations should implement the following mitigations:

  1. Restrict network access to iDRAC interfaces to trusted management networks only
  2. Implement strong authentication mechanisms and enforce complex passwords for all iDRAC accounts
  3. Regularly audit and review iDRAC user accounts and their privilege levels
  4. Monitor iDRAC logs for suspicious access attempts or unusual file access patterns
  5. Consider using IP filtering to limit which systems can connect to the iDRAC interface
