Description Preview

The Grandstream UCM6200 series IP PBX devices running firmware versions prior to 1.0.20.22 contain an SQL injection vulnerability in the HTTP server's websockify endpoint. This vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute SQL commands through a crafted username during login attempts. By leveraging timing attacks, attackers can extract user passwords, potentially leading to unauthorized system access.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-5725) is classified as an SQL Injection (CWE-89) affecting Grandstream UCM6200 series IP PBX devices. The issue exists in the websockify endpoint of the HTTP server where user input from the login process is not properly sanitized before being used in SQL queries. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted login requests with malicious SQL code in the username field. Through timing attacks, the attacker can determine when injected SQL queries return true conditions, allowing them to systematically extract password information character by character. This attack requires no authentication and can be performed remotely, making it particularly dangerous.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, organizations should:

  1. Update Grandstream UCM6200 series devices to firmware version 1.0.20.22 or later, which contains the fix for this vulnerability.
  2. If immediate patching is not possible, implement network segmentation to restrict access to the management interface of affected devices.
  3. Monitor for suspicious login attempts, particularly those containing SQL syntax in username fields.
  4. Consider implementing a web application firewall (WAF) that can detect and block SQL injection attempts.
  5. Ensure strong, complex passwords are used for all accounts on the system to increase the difficulty of brute force attacks.
