Description Preview

A heap overflow vulnerability (CWE-787) has been identified in Autodesk FBX-SDK versions 2019.2 and earlier. This vulnerability could potentially allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected systems. When processing certain malformed files, the FBX-SDK may write data beyond the allocated heap buffer boundaries, leading to memory corruption that could be exploited by attackers.

Overview

The Autodesk FBX-SDK is a cross-platform library widely used in 3D content creation applications for importing and exporting 3D assets. The vulnerability occurs during the processing of specially crafted FBX files, which can trigger a heap buffer overflow condition. This could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the same privileges as the application using the vulnerable SDK. The vulnerability is particularly concerning for applications that process untrusted FBX files from external sources.

Remediation

Users and developers are advised to take the following actions:

  • Update to the latest version of Autodesk FBX-SDK (newer than 2019.2)
  • If updating is not immediately possible, implement additional validation of FBX files before processing
  • Consider implementing application sandboxing for applications that use the FBX-SDK
  • Avoid opening FBX files from untrusted sources until patched
  • Software developers using the FBX-SDK in their applications should rebuild their applications with the updated SDK version
