Description Preview

In OSSEC-HIDS versions 2.7 through 3.5.0, the server component responsible for log analysis (ossec-analysisd) is vulnerable to a denial of service attack through a NULL pointer dereference. This vulnerability can be exploited by local users who can write crafted messages directly to the analysisd UNIX domain socket, causing the service to crash.

Overview

OSSEC-HIDS (Host Intrusion Detection System) is an open-source security monitoring tool that performs log analysis, integrity checking, rootkit detection, and alerting. The vulnerability affects the ossec-analysisd component, which is responsible for analyzing logs and generating alerts. When a local user with appropriate permissions sends specially crafted messages to the analysisd UNIX domain socket, it can trigger a NULL pointer dereference, resulting in a crash of the service. This vulnerability is classified as CWE-476 (NULL Pointer Dereference) and affects all versions from 2.7 through 3.5.0. The impact is limited to local users who have access to write to the UNIX domain socket, but it can disrupt the security monitoring capabilities of the system.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, system administrators should:

  1. Update OSSEC-HIDS to the latest version that contains the fix for this vulnerability.
  2. If immediate updating is not possible, restrict access to the analysisd UNIX domain socket by ensuring proper file permissions are set.
  3. Monitor system logs for any unusual activity related to the ossec-analysisd service.
  4. Consider implementing additional access controls to limit which local users can interact with OSSEC components.
  5. Regularly audit user permissions to ensure the principle of least privilege is maintained.
