Description Preview

In Artica Pandora FMS through version 7.42, there is a critical authentication bypass vulnerability (CWE-306) that allows unauthenticated attackers to read the chat history. The exposed chat history file is stored in JSON format and contains sensitive information including user names, user IDs, private messages, and timestamps. This vulnerability could lead to information disclosure, potentially exposing confidential communications between system administrators or users.

Overview

Pandora FMS (Flexible Monitoring System) is an enterprise-grade monitoring solution. The vulnerability exists in versions through 7.42 where the application fails to properly authenticate users before allowing access to chat history data. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability without authentication to view all chat communications that have occurred within the system. The exposed data includes personally identifiable information (user names and IDs) as well as potentially sensitive communications in private messages. The timestamp information could also be used to establish patterns of communication and activity within the organization.

Remediation

Organizations using Artica Pandora FMS should take the following actions:

  1. Update to a version newer than 7.42 if available, as it may contain a fix for this vulnerability.
  2. If updating is not immediately possible, consider implementing network-level access controls to restrict access to the Pandora FMS interface to only authorized IP addresses.
  3. Review chat history for any sensitive information that may have been exposed.
  4. Implement additional authentication mechanisms or web application firewall rules to protect the chat functionality.
  5. Monitor logs for any unauthorized access attempts to the chat history.
  6. Consider disabling the chat feature if it's not critical to operations until a patch is applied.
