Description Preview

A directory traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) exists in multiple Symmetricom SyncServer models including S100 2.90.70.3, S200 1.30, S250 1.25, S300 2.65.0, and S350 2.80.1. The vulnerability allows attackers to access files outside of the intended directory by manipulating the FileName parameter in the syslog.php script. This could potentially lead to unauthorized access to sensitive system files.

Overview

The vulnerability affects Symmetricom SyncServer devices, which are network time servers used for time synchronization in various enterprise environments. The affected devices include models S100, S200, S250, S300, and S350 with specific firmware versions. The directory traversal vulnerability exists in the syslog.php script, where improper validation of the FileName parameter allows attackers to navigate outside the intended directory structure. This could enable unauthorized access to sensitive system files, potentially leading to information disclosure, system compromise, or denial of service.

Remediation

  1. Update firmware to the latest version if available from the manufacturer (now Microchip Technology, which acquired Symmetricom).
  2. If updates are not available, implement network segmentation to restrict access to the management interfaces of affected devices.
  3. Use access control lists (ACLs) and firewall rules to limit access to the devices' web interfaces.
  4. Monitor system logs for suspicious access attempts to the syslog.php script.
  5. Consider implementing a web application firewall (WAF) to filter malicious requests containing directory traversal patterns.
  6. If possible, disable the vulnerable component if it's not essential for operation.
