Description Preview

A vulnerability in Cisco Webex Player for Windows and MacOS could allow an attacker to cause the affected software to terminate or to gain access to memory state information that is related to the vulnerable application. This vulnerability (CVE-2021-1527) is due to insufficient validation of values in Webex recording files that are stored in Webex Recording Format (WRF). An attacker could exploit this by sending a malicious WRF file to a user and persuading them to open it with the affected software.

Overview

This vulnerability (CWE-787: Out-of-bounds Write) affects Cisco Webex Player for both Windows and MacOS operating systems. The vulnerability stems from improper validation of WRF files, which could be exploited through social engineering tactics. If successfully exploited, an attacker could cause the Webex Player application to crash or potentially access memory state information related to the application. This could lead to information disclosure or denial of service conditions.

Remediation

Users should ensure they are running the latest version of Cisco Webex Player, which contains patches for this vulnerability. Organizations should implement the following measures:

  1. Update Cisco Webex Player to the latest version as provided by Cisco
  2. Train users to be cautious when opening WRF files from unknown sources
  3. Implement email filtering to detect potentially malicious WRF file attachments
  4. Follow security best practices regarding the handling of files from external sources
