Overview
This vulnerability (CVE-2021-20028) is classified as a SQL injection vulnerability in SonicWall's Secure Remote Access (SRA) appliances. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of SQL commands in the application, allowing attackers to potentially inject and execute malicious SQL statements. This could lead to unauthorized access to the database, data theft, data manipulation, or even complete system compromise. The vulnerability specifically affects SRA appliances running all 8.x firmware versions and those running firmware version 9.0.0.9-26sv or earlier.
Remediation
Since the affected SonicWall SRA products are end-of-life, there are no firmware updates available to patch this vulnerability. Organizations still using these devices should take the following actions:
- Migrate to supported SonicWall products such as SMA (Secure Mobile Access) appliances.
- If immediate migration is not possible, implement network segmentation to limit exposure of the vulnerable devices.
- Monitor logs for suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation attempts.
- Implement strong access controls to limit who can access the SRA appliance.
- Consider placing the SRA appliance behind a web application firewall (WAF) that can detect and block SQL injection attempts.
