Description Preview

A vulnerability in Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC iQ-R series Safety CPU modules and SIL2 Process CPU modules allows remote unauthenticated attackers to gain unauthorized access by capturing credentials through network traffic sniffing during user registration or password changes. The vulnerability stems from insufficiently protected credentials (CWE-522) in the affected firmware versions.

Overview

The vulnerability affects Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC iQ-R series Safety CPU modules (R08/16/32/120SFCPU) with firmware versions "26" and prior, as well as MELSEC iQ-R series SIL2 Process CPU modules (R08/16/32/120PSFCPU) with firmware versions "11" and prior. An attacker who can monitor network traffic can capture authentication credentials when legitimate users register new accounts or change passwords. These captured credentials can then be used to gain unauthorized access to the affected systems. This vulnerability is particularly concerning for industrial control systems where unauthorized access could lead to safety issues or operational disruptions.

Remediation

  1. Update firmware to versions newer than "26" for Safety CPU modules (R08/16/32/120SFCPU) and newer than "11" for SIL2 Process CPU modules (R08/16/32/120PSFCPU).
  2. Implement network segmentation to restrict access to the affected devices.
  3. Monitor network traffic for suspicious activities.
  4. Implement additional authentication mechanisms where possible.
  5. Follow Mitsubishi Electric's specific security recommendations outlined in their advisory (2021-009).
  6. Consider implementing encrypted communications for all credential exchanges.
  7. Regularly change passwords and user credentials even after patching.
