Description Preview

The Yada Wiki WordPress plugin before version 3.4.1 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The plugin does not properly sanitize, validate, or escape the anchor attribute of its shortcode, which allows attackers to inject malicious JavaScript code that executes when users view the affected content.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-24470) affects the Yada Wiki WordPress plugin versions prior to 3.4.1. The issue stems from improper handling of user input in the plugin's shortcode functionality, specifically the anchor attribute. When a malicious user with appropriate privileges adds crafted content using this shortcode, the injected JavaScript code becomes permanently stored in the database and executes whenever other users view the affected page. This stored XSS vulnerability could allow attackers to steal cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive information, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or redirect users to malicious websites.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, website administrators should:

  1. Update the Yada Wiki WordPress plugin to version 3.4.1 or later immediately
  2. Review existing wiki content for potential malicious code that may have been injected
  3. Consider implementing a Web Application Firewall (WAF) as an additional layer of protection
  4. Follow WordPress security best practices, including regular updates of all plugins and themes
  5. Limit user privileges to only those necessary for their role within the site
