Description Preview

Adobe After Effects version 18.2 and earlier versions contain a memory corruption vulnerability (CWE-787: Out-of-bounds Write) that could lead to arbitrary code execution. When a user opens a specially crafted file, an unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute malicious code with the privileges of the current user.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-28602) affects Adobe After Effects version 18.2 and earlier versions. The issue is a memory corruption vulnerability that occurs when the application parses a specially crafted file. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-787 (Out-of-bounds Write), which occurs when the software writes data past the end or before the beginning of the intended buffer. This can corrupt data, crash the program, or lead to code execution.

The vulnerability requires user interaction to be exploited, as a victim must open a malicious file. Once exploited, an attacker can execute arbitrary code with the same privileges as the current user, potentially allowing them to take control of the affected system, access sensitive information, or perform other malicious actions.

Remediation

Users should update to the latest version of Adobe After Effects as specified in the Adobe security bulletin APSB21-49. Adobe has released patches to address this vulnerability.

Additionally, users should:

  • Avoid opening After Effects files from untrusted sources
  • Implement the principle of least privilege by running applications with minimal necessary permissions
  • Keep all Adobe products updated with the latest security patches
  • Consider using security software that can detect and block exploitation attempts
