Description Preview

ISPConfig versions prior to 3.2.2 are vulnerable to SQL injection attacks. This vulnerability, identified as CVE-2021-3021, allows attackers to potentially execute arbitrary SQL commands on the underlying database server, which could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, data manipulation, or even complete system compromise.

Overview

ISPConfig is a popular web hosting control panel for Linux systems. The vulnerability exists in versions before 3.2.2 where improper validation of user-supplied input allows SQL injection attacks. This is classified as CWE-89 (SQL Injection), which occurs when user-controlled input is incorporated into database SQL queries without proper validation or sanitization. Successful exploitation could allow attackers to bypass authentication, access sensitive data, modify database contents, or potentially execute commands on the hosting server. The severity of this vulnerability is high as it could lead to complete compromise of the affected system and all hosted websites or services.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, system administrators should:

  1. Update ISPConfig to version 3.2.2 or later immediately.
  2. If immediate updating is not possible, implement additional security controls such as:
    • Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to filter potential SQL injection attempts
    • Network access restrictions to the ISPConfig admin interface
    • Regular monitoring of database and system logs for suspicious activities
  3. After updating, verify the installation was successful and check for any signs of previous compromise.
  4. Consider implementing the principle of least privilege for database users used by ISPConfig.
  5. Regularly back up all configuration and data to enable recovery in case of a security incident.
