Description Preview

NetSetMan Pro versions before 5.0 contain a privilege escalation vulnerability that allows an unauthenticated attacker with physical access to a computer to execute arbitrary commands as SYSTEM. The vulnerability exists in the pre-logon profile switch button feature within the Windows logon screen, where an attacker can leverage the "save log to file" functionality to navigate to cmd.exe and gain administrative shell access.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-34546) affects NetSetMan Pro versions prior to 5.0. NetSetMan is a network settings manager application for Windows systems. The issue stems from improper authentication controls (CWE-287) in the pre-logon profile switch feature. When this feature is enabled, it creates an attack vector where an unauthenticated user with physical access to the machine can exploit the "save log to file" functionality to navigate to cmd.exe and execute commands with SYSTEM privileges. This represents a critical security risk as it allows complete compromise of affected systems without requiring authentication credentials.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, users should implement the following measures:

  1. Update NetSetMan Pro to version 5.0 or later, which contains fixes for this vulnerability
  2. If immediate updating is not possible, disable the pre-logon profile switch button within the Windows logon screen
  3. Restrict physical access to machines running vulnerable versions of NetSetMan Pro
  4. Consider implementing additional physical security controls for sensitive systems
  5. Monitor system logs for any suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation attempts
