Description Preview

Adobe Magento Commerce versions 2.4.2 (and earlier), 2.4.2-p1 (and earlier), and 2.3.7 (and earlier) contain a Path Traversal vulnerability that can be exploited via the `theme[preview_image]` parameter. This vulnerability allows attackers with admin privileges to potentially achieve remote code execution on the affected system, posing a significant security risk to e-commerce platforms using these vulnerable versions.

Overview

The vulnerability (CVE-2021-36031) affects multiple versions of Adobe Magento Commerce, a popular e-commerce platform. The issue stems from improper validation of the theme[preview_image] parameter, which allows for path traversal attacks. An attacker who has already obtained administrative access to the Magento admin panel can exploit this vulnerability to navigate outside of intended directories and potentially execute malicious code remotely. This vulnerability is particularly dangerous as it can lead to complete compromise of the affected Magento installation, potentially exposing customer data, payment information, and allowing unauthorized modifications to the e-commerce site.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, Adobe recommends the following actions:

  1. Update to the latest version of Magento:
    • For Magento Commerce 2.4.x: Upgrade to version 2.4.3 or later
    • For Magento Commerce 2.3.x: Upgrade to version 2.3.7-p1 or later
  2. Apply the security patches provided by Adobe if immediate upgrading is not possible
  3. Implement strong access controls for admin accounts
  4. Regularly audit admin user accounts and remove unnecessary privileges
  5. Monitor system logs for suspicious activities related to theme modifications
  6. Consider implementing additional web application firewall rules to detect and block path traversal attempts
