Description Preview

A Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in OTRS Community Edition and OTRS 7.0.x. An attacker can craft a specific request for the appointment edit screen that could lead to execution of malicious JavaScript code in a victim's browser. This vulnerability could allow attackers to steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or redirect users to malicious websites.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-36094) is a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability that affects the appointment edit screen in OTRS systems. The issue allows attackers to inject malicious scripts that execute when a user accesses the compromised appointment edit screen. The vulnerability impacts OTRS Community Edition 6.0.1 and later versions, as well as OTRS 7.0.x version 7.0.28 and prior versions. XSS attacks can lead to theft of sensitive information, session hijacking, credential theft, and other malicious activities that can compromise the security of the OTRS system and its users.

Remediation

To remediate this vulnerability, system administrators should:

  1. Update to the latest patched version of OTRS as recommended in the security advisory
  2. For OTRS Community Edition 6.0.x: Upgrade to a patched version if available
  3. For OTRS 7.0.x: Upgrade to version 7.0.29 or later
  4. If immediate patching is not possible, consider implementing web application firewall rules to filter potentially malicious inputs to the appointment edit screen
  5. Monitor system logs for suspicious activity related to the appointment edit functionality
  6. Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to help mitigate the impact of XSS attacks
