Description Preview

A command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) exists in Druva inSync version 6.9.0 for MacOS. The vulnerability stems from inadequate sanitization of user input when making calls to the Python os.system library. This flaw allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands by sending specially crafted payloads to the local HTTP server running as part of the inSync client. The vulnerability affects inSync Client version 7.0.1 and earlier versions.

Overview

The vulnerability in Druva inSync for MacOS allows for command injection attacks due to insufficient input validation. When the local HTTP server processes certain requests, it passes unsanitized user input directly to the Python os.system function, which executes commands on the operating system. An attacker who can send requests to the local HTTP server can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the inSync client process. This could potentially lead to privilege escalation, data theft, or system compromise.

Remediation

Users should immediately update their Druva inSync client to version 7.0.2 or later, which contains patches for this vulnerability. If immediate updating is not possible, consider temporarily disabling the inSync client until updates can be applied. Organizations should also:

  1. Monitor systems for suspicious activity
  2. Implement network segmentation to limit access to the local HTTP server
  3. Apply the principle of least privilege for all user accounts
  4. Follow Druva's security advisories for additional mitigation instructions
