Description Preview

A vulnerability in Ghost CMS versions 4.0.0 through 4.9.4 allows any authenticated user, including those with limited contributor permissions, to access admin-level API keys through the integrations API endpoint. This implementation error in the limits service creates a privilege escalation risk where lower-privileged users can gain administrative access to the system.

Overview

Ghost is a popular Node.js content management system used by many websites and blogs. The vulnerability (CVE-2021-39192) exists in the limits service implementation, which failed to properly restrict access to sensitive API endpoints. When exploited, any authenticated user can access the integrations API endpoint and view admin-level API keys. This allows contributors and other non-administrator users to escalate their privileges and potentially gain complete control over the Ghost installation. The vulnerability affects all Ghost installations running versions 4.0.0 through 4.9.4.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, take the following actions:

  1. Update Ghost to version 4.10.0 or later, which contains the security patch.
  2. After updating, regenerate all API keys to invalidate any that may have been compromised.
  3. If immediate updating is not possible, disable all non-Administrator accounts as a temporary workaround to prevent unauthorized API access.
  4. Review system logs for any suspicious activity that might indicate exploitation of this vulnerability.
  5. Consider implementing additional access controls and monitoring for your Ghost installation.
