Overview
The vulnerability in SelectSurvey.NET affects the UploadedImageDisplay.aspx endpoint, which is responsible for displaying uploaded images within surveys. Due to improper access controls, an attacker can bypass authorization checks by manipulating the ID parameter in the request. By incrementing this parameter sequentially (starting from 1), the attacker can systematically access user-submitted survey data, including potentially sensitive information. This vulnerability poses a significant risk to data confidentiality as it allows unauthorized access to survey responses that may contain personal or confidential information.
Remediation
Organizations using SelectSurvey.NET should immediately upgrade to version 5.052.000 or later, which contains patches for this vulnerability. If immediate upgrading is not possible, consider implementing the following temporary mitigations:
- Restrict access to the UploadedImageDisplay.aspx endpoint through web server configuration or firewall rules
- Implement additional authentication mechanisms in front of the application
- Monitor access logs for suspicious sequential requests to the vulnerable endpoint
- Consider disabling file upload functionality if it's not critical to operations until the patch can be applied
